Time bonuses for overtime

  • The time supplements that you receive for overtime are staggered in the TVöD: In the pay groups 1 to 9, according to § 8 para. 1 sentence 2 letter a) TVöD a surcharge of 30 percent is paid, in the pay groups 10 to 15, however, only a surcharge of 15 percent. The lower income groups receive a higher allowance for overtime.
  • The percentage surcharge for overtime is paid on the individual hourly wage up to level 4 of the respective wage group. For example, if you receive a salary in salary group 12 in level 5, you will receive from If you work overtime, a surcharge of 15 percent is added to the hourly wage in pay group 12 of the Level 4.
  • The alignment up to level 4 results from the protocol declaration of the collective bargaining parties to paragraph 1 sentence 1 of § 8 TVöD. This is a peculiarity insofar as otherwise, with time surcharges, this is not calculated according to the individual level, but according to level 3.

Work at night or on Sundays and public holidays

  • If you work at night, you receive a time surcharge of 20 percent; if you work on Sundays, there is a 25 percent surcharge.   • If you even work overtime on a Sunday, you will earn a lot with it. Because both time surcharges are not offset against each other, but exist side by side. It is different if you work on a Saturday, which is also a public holiday.
  • For work on Saturday, there is a time surcharge of 20 percent between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. If Saturday is also a public holiday, only the higher holiday surcharge is paid, see § 8 Para. 1 sentence 3 TVöD.

Not spending New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve at home

  • Often there is "negotiation" long in advance as to which of the colleagues will take over the shift on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve. Since most people prefer to celebrate at home on these days, there are time surcharges for work on these days as well.
  • These are 35 percent for work after six in the morning. If one of the days is a Sunday, then only the higher time surcharge is paid. This is not the Sunday surcharge, but the "Christmas Eve" or "New Year's Eve" surcharge.
  • If your employer has set up a working time account for you, the time bonuses can also be credited to this account. They are then converted into time according to the percentage surcharge.

Time surcharges can be a salary make it attractive in the public service. However, the surcharge is not always based on the individual pay level.
