What you need:

  • Webbing
  • Braids
  • Centimeter measure
  • Lighter
  • Pins
  • sewing machine
  • Snap closure
  • possibly fleece, leather or neoprene
  • D-ring

You can find beautiful braids in online shops or in craft stores. You will also find snap fasteners there. You can get the webbing by the meter in any hardware store or on the Internet.

Measure the length of the braids for the collar

  1. Put your dog in front of you. Now take the zenith meter and measure the circumference of your animal's neck. Measure so that the measuring tape is not loose, but is so tight that there is no more room for two fingers. Memorize or write down the number.
  2. Add another 8 cm to the measured number. This is how many centimeters you need in total on the borders and webbing.
  3. Make sure that your webbing fits through the buckle. If it is wider, you will have to make it narrower. It is better to make sure that everything fits together right away.
  4. The borders should not be wider than the webbing either.

How to sew trims on a dog collar

  1. Cut the correct length (dimensions + 8 cm sewing allowance) from the roll of webbing.
  2. Briefly hold a lit lighter by the two cut ends. This will prevent the webbing from fraying. Do the same with the borders.
  3. sew Now use the sewing machine to secure the border to the edges by sewing a complete square. If you choose a thread color that goes with the border, it won't be so noticeable if you can't get the seam pin straight. The stitch should be a straight stitch. To be on the safe side, you can place the border on the webbing before sewing and secure it with pins. But then remove the pins again.
  4. Now take the sewn together webbing and measure 3 cm at one end. Bend the end inwards so that the webbing lies on top of the webbing and not the trims on top of each other. Take the "male" part of the buckle and push the folded end of the strap through the opening provided. Sew a vertical seam downwards directly behind the snap fastener.
  5. Now continue sewing horizontally on the lower edge up to the end of the webbing. The edge at the end is sewn up again and continued horizontally until you have reached the beginning of the buckle again. It is best if you also sew a cross into the square to be absolutely sure that neither the strap nor the braid can come off.
  6. At the other end of the half-finished collar, fold over 5 cm of webbing with braids. Make sure that you fold back inwards, i.e. not the braids on top of each other, but the webbing should be sewn on top of each other. Now push the bent part of the belt strap through the "female" part of the buckle. Now sew two to three vertical seams directly behind the snap fastener.
  7. Now comes the most important thing: the D-ring. Slide the straight part of the ring between the two ends of the strap. Make sure that the ring is on the outside later! Sew the end in exactly the same way as described in point 5.
  8. Your tailor-made dog collar with your own borders is ready.

Should your dog have a sensitive coat, or you think that the webbing directly on your pet's coat is not good then just cut out a suitable piece of leather or fleece or neoprene and sew it under the entire underside of the Collar. Give all edges of the collar 1 cm seam allowance, then you have the measurements for the base. You just leave out the buckles.
