Anyone who has a swimming pool must always pay attention to the water quality. If the pH is too low, you need to do something about it. Otherwise the acidic water can damage the swimming pool.

Ideally, the water in a swimming pool is neutral. It must not be acidic or alkaline. If the pH value is too high, you can get irritated and very dry skin. However, a value that is too low is not good either.

Effects of low pH

  • Note that the pH in the pool is always neutral when it is between 7.0 and 7.4. On the other hand, if it is below 7.0, it is too low and no longer in the neutral area. You should never let it come to that.
  • This then leads to the fact that the water causes corrosion of the valuable fittings. Lime builds up on the metallic objects, which can even create real holes.
  • Acid water also dissolves the mortar between the tiles. In the worst case, tiles can discolour and have to be replaced. The new grouting of the tiles is very expensive.

How to increase the pH in the pool

  • Measure the pH in your pool about once a week. You can carry out the measurement with pH test tables or test strips.

  • Add an alkaline reacting granulate to the water to increase the water quality. You can simply add the granules to the water while the filter system is running.
  • For a 0.1 increase in pH, give 100 g per 10 m3 added. It is important that you follow the dosage exactly.
  • Check the water quality again the next day. In this way you can check whether the value has leveled off again at 7.0 to 7.4. Once this has happened, the water is neutral again and no more damage can be caused to the swimming pool.
