What you need:

  • Spray paint
  • primer
  • Newsprint
  • Masking tape
  • Emery paper
  • Vintage bicycle basket
  • Retro bicycle lamp
  • brown bicycle saddle
  • brown handlebar grips
  • cream colored coats
  • Retro bell

This is how your bike shines in a retro look

Not every bicycle is suitable for redesigning it in a retro look. Ideally, your bike has a low step through. The new old design does not go well with overly sporty models. But if you have a suitable frame, you can move your bike back into the past decades with relatively little work and expense. The first step is a new coat of paint.

  1. To repaint your bike you need sandpaper, a primer and a suitable spray paint. Retro candy shades such as pastel mint or blue or a nice cream shade are particularly chic. If that's too kitschy for you, you can also choose a slightly broken red.
  2. The first step is to thoroughly clean the bike. You can easily remove mud and dirt with water and a sponge.
  3. Ideally, you disassemble the bike before repainting. This allows you to process the frame evenly without hitting tires, spokes or other parts with the spray paint. If you don't have the know-how, you can either get help or work with newspaper and masking tape. Then use the masking tape to mask the handles, lights, emblems and everything else small parts that shouldn't get any paint.
  4. First sand the existing paint a little. Then apply the primer so the bike doesn't rust under the paint.
  5. Painting a bike - that's how it works

If on a bike the frame and tires are actually still OK, just the paint ...

  6. Now the spray paint is used. So that as little as possible disappears into the ether, hold a newspaper behind the parts that you are currently spraying. If you haven't taken the bike apart, use newspaper to cover larger areas as well. For example, slide the paper under the mudguard to cut out the tires or in front of the chain.
  7. Spray very thinly so that there are no noses. It is better to do three thin coats than one thick one. Do not finish painting until the entire frame has a uniform and covering new color.

These details make the bike perfect

A light blue frame doesn't make a retro bike. Pay attention to details to make your bike as stylish as possible.

  • A new bicycle lamp is a great addition to the new coat of paint. For less than ten euros you can get a retro model with a matching rear light. The egg-shaped chrome-colored lamps go well with the light pastel shades of the frame.
  • A vintage bicycle basket is also nice. If you want to get really serious, choose a semicircular handlebar basket made from rattan or wicker that is fastened with straps. A basket made of woven plastic is more weatherproof. If you need a little more space, you can hang saddlebags in brown and cream leather look over the luggage rack.
  • With a wide brown synthetic leather saddle you sit comfortably and in proper style. It is best to choose the handlebar grips to match.
  • Cream colored coats and a retro bell complete your retro bike.
