If you have the facade If you want to improve the look of your house with wood cladding, you must first examine the exterior walls for moisture. Check the plaster or stone for any damage and touch up the damaged areas. In old buildings in particular, it makes sense to apply thermal insulation in front of the cladding. The procedure is as follows:

  1. First of all, you should measure the roof edge so that you are sure that the insulation and wood paneling fit under there at all. Then they get squared timber with a thickness of 12 mm or 8 mm and the appropriate fastening material from the hardware store.
  2. Place the first square timber on the facade approx. 3 cm horizontally over the later lower edge of the wooden cladding and then work your way up vertically with the other squared timbers.
  3. Adjust the distance to the selected insulation material so that there are no open joints afterwards and the insulation can be pinched in exactly. Otherwise the joints must be filled with foam. But you should adhere to at least 5 mm.
  4. Depending on the type of insulation you have chosen, you will need to butt them close together. Some materials also have to be glued in a windproof manner. Now the wood cladding for the facade can be attached.

Façade wood cladding without insulation

Even if you don't insulation behind the wooden cladding on the facade, you should remember that each cladding must be adequately ventilated. Otherwise water can get in and that wood rot away from you from within.

  1. For wooden cladding on the facade without insulation, roof battens with a thickness of 30 to 50 mm, which you can screw or dowel directly to the facade, are sufficient for the substructure. If you want to board the outer walls horizontally, attach the boards directly to the battens.
  2. If the cladding is to run vertically, first attach the counter battens vertically and then mount the boards running horizontally on them.
  3. With both approaches, the slats must be 60 cm apart.
  4. Remember to make a ventilation tape or angle on the ventilation ends. This prevents animals from crawling behind it.

If you want, you can now paint the wooden cladding on the facade in color. However, the coating must then be repeated every few years. In any case, you should opt for quality wood, which will extend the service life of the facade cladding by years.
