10 format for photos

Everything used to be easier, even the photo formats! Today's digital cameras and the older conventional cameras produce different images. A 10 format can be confusing when it comes to image size.

10 format or 11.5 image size? - It used to be easier to make a decision.
10 format or 11.5 image size? - It used to be easier to make a decision.

What you need:

  • Possibly. a calculator

10 format? - Choose the correct image size

  • It used to be simple: there were rectangular image formats, for example 7 x 10 or 9 x 13, and with very few cameras there were also square image formats such as 9 x 9 cm.
  • At today's Digital cameras however, there are two main formats used for rectangular photos. These formats are abbreviated to 3: 4 and 2: 3. This means that the dimensions of the width and length of the image are in the stated proportions. These are of course not yet direct specifications for image sizes (for example in cm).
  • But you can translate the aspect ratio information into image sizes. For example, if the aspect ratio is 2: 3 and the shorter side of the photo measures 10 cm, the length is 15 cm. The picture has the size 10 x 15 cm, the so-called 10 format. Accordingly, there are photos in the sizes 20 x 30 cm or 12 x 18 cm. However, if the aspect ratio is 3: 4, other image sizes result, namely 11.5 (more precise value 11.25) x 15 cm or 13 (exact value 13.5) x 18 cm. This is (roughly) the same as the image formats used in the past.
  • In order to decide on the correct image size when ordering prints of your digital photos, you must first know your image format (3: 4 or 2: 3). If you make the wrong choice here, you could end up with either a white border on the photos during development have two sides or (important) details at the edge of the picture are simply not in the photo because they are cut away became.
  • You can safely choose a 10 format when ordering images if you have a camera with an aspect ratio of 2: 3.
  • Photo size 9 - this is how you find your way around

Do you want to order a photo print and the size information seems Spanish to you? …

  • By the way: Even if this is not the case with your camera, you can edit many digital images with an image editing program (e.g. B. IrfanView is free of charge, but PhotoShop is also available) by cutting it out to size 10 (i.e. 10 x 15 cm). Pay attention to the resolution for good prints. It should be at least 300 dpi.
