Make a selection with the smart scissors

With the intelligent or magnetic scissors you can create a selection in an image with just a few clicks, which is based on the edge between different colored areas. As a result, objects can also be cropped very well with this selection tool.

  1. Select the magnetic scissors from the tools window. Alternatively, you can find them in the “Tools” menu under “Selection tools”. There it is called "Intelligent Scissors".
  2. With a click of the mouse, you set a few control points around the object along the color edge. The GIMP automatically creates a line from this that runs along the edge of the color.
  3. When you have completed the outline of the area you want to cut out, click on the first point again.
  4. You can still correct the border created by the GIMP by dragging the control points with the mouse button pressed.
  5. Design your own troubleshooting images with GIMP

Troubleshooting pictures are a nice pastime for young and old. Have a lot of fun ...

  6. As soon as you click in the outlined area, it becomes available for selection.

Cut, copy and paste an image section in GIMP

Like any other selection, you can copy or cut the selected area in GIMP and others pictures insert.

  1. From the Edit menu, choose either Copy or Cut. If you cut the selection, it will disappear from the image.
  2. Open the image file into which you want to insert the selection via the “File” menu. If you want to cut out the object, open a new file.
  3. In this file, click on “Paste As” in the “Edit” menu and then on “New Layer”. The selection is inserted as a new layer.
  4. If you click the “Scale” icon in the toolbar, you can enlarge or reduce the new layer. You always get a preview before you confirm the scaling.
  5. The newly inserted layer can of course also be moved. To do this, select the appropriate symbol in the tool window.
