Painting on glass - your work materials

  • For painting on glass, you need glass paints. There are two types of color: Colours based on water or synthetic resin. Both glass paints can be processed well. Water-based glass paint is applied in the oven (at approx. 150 ° C) and the paint is dishwasher-safe afterwards. The disadvantage of this type of color is the low proportion of color pigment; the applied colors are not particularly intense. Resin-based glass paints are not baked in; therefore this paint application is very sensitive and only smudge-proof. Painting over with acrylic gloss varnish makes the paint application more resistant, but not dishwasher-safe. Resin-based paints are suitable for painting decorative glass that is not exposed to excessive heat. The great advantage of these colors is their enormous luminosity due to their high proportion of color pigments.
  • Many local craft stores offer a wide range of glass paints. If you are unsure which glass paint is suitable for your project, let the specialist staff advise you. The colorful color palette of glass colors allows you to apply your flower motifs in an almost nature-identical play of colors. Transparent glass paints are available in matt or glossy; opaque white and black colors. Most colors can be mixed well with each other and thinned with solvent or water. Glass paints can be applied with a brush, sponge or screen printing; Burned-in colors make your glass appear colored through and through.
  • When painting glass that is exposed to extreme heat, it is best to use heat-resistant glass paints. You can paint glass bowls, window pictures or decorative glass with smudge-proof glass paints. Light bulbs decorated with small flowers or patterns are also ideal for painting. To do this, use a special incandescent immersion paint (available e.g. B. at Conrad Electronic).
  • If you are not the most gifted artist and you find it difficult to paint with a brush, use glass pens. Particularly round glass vessels, where the paint can easily run away during processing, can be painted with such pens without any problems. Even small children achieve beautiful results with the pens.

You can take photos of your favorite flowers yourself and trace or trace them.
