At Christmas and Advent they spread their cozy light and help us through the dark season. They are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors. But try making candles yourself. You not only receive a particularly individual home accessory, but also a personal gift for the celebration.

There are several techniques for making candles for Christmas. You can pour them, draw them, model them or decorate single-colored candles. Here you will find two very different instructions.

Pour a drip candle for Christmas

  1. Make ice cubes a day before pouring. One mold or one ice cube bag per candle is sufficient.
  2. Tie the candle wick to the stick and place it on the cappuccino can so that the wick is in the middle and reaches the bottom. You can buy candle wick or use the wick of a household candle. Please do not use any other material, it seldom works.
  3. As a casting material, you can wax from the craft store, which you can color with coloring pastilles if necessary. But wax residues are also good. If you mix different colored wax together, the result is usually a brownish hue. If you want to pour a white candle, you can also melt down inexpensive household candles, the wicks of which you can then use for other homemade candles.
  4. Put the wax in the clean tin can and melt it in the water bath.
  5. Pouring candles with children - this is how you create a special afternoon of handicrafts

  6. Release the ice cubes from the mold just before pouring.
  7. Put three to four ice cubes in the cappuccino can. Now carefully pour some wax into the mold until the ice cubes are covered. Due to the coldness of the ice cubes, the upper layer of wax solidifies relatively quickly. Now put in a couple of ice cubes again and then the wax and continue doing this until the mold is filled. Make sure that there are ice cubes both on the edge and in the middle.
  8. When the wax has set after a few hours, remove the candle from the mold. If that doesn't work right away, dip the can briefly in warm water.
  9. Due to the melted ice cubes, the candle has several holes inside and also on the edge. Try to let the water of the melted ice cubes run out by shaking and holding in different positions. If this is not entirely successful, in the worst case scenario, the flame will go out when it burns down.
  10. These candles must stand on a wide plate when burning, as they will drip. It is interesting to see how the liquid wax makes its way through the caves and how it creates new shapes. This is why this extraordinary candle is not only an original gift idea for Christmas.

Decorate candles with liquid wax

Pens that are filled with liquid wax work well for that Handcraft with children. They are also available in gold and silver, which is of course particularly popular at Christmas.

  1. Since it is not always easy to paint from memory, you can work with motif templates. Search the internet for simple Christmas coloring pages and use a graphics program or Word to resize them to fit your candles. If necessary, assemble a whole sheet of different motifs and print it out.
  2. Roughly cut out a motif and place it on the candle. Hold it tight and use the ballpoint pen to trace the contours with light pressure.
  3. The contours are now visible on the candle and serve as a template for you to paint. Avoid painting larger areas, as these can crack as they dry.
  4. The motifs have to dry for about 24 hours.
  5. Liquid wax sticks that work according to the window color principle are also available in stores. The picture is painted on a foil and transferred after drying.
