Before you start: View your picture at 100% display size. When the display is enlarged to over 100%, every pixel-based image becomes pixelated. Only then will you decide whether processing is necessary.

How to de-pixelate

  • In the case of images with few colors, mark the area to be processed in Adobe Photoshop by pressing "Ctrl" and clicking on the thumbnail preview of the layer in question in the layer palette.
  • Switch to the "Paths" tab.
  • Click the little arrow on the right side of the palette and choose Create Work Path. Experiment with tolerance.
  • Click again on the small arrow on the right and select "Fill path area" and possibly "Fill path outline".
  • Open animated GIFs - it's easy

You can find animated GIF files all over the Internet. You can use these little ...

  • Alternatively, you can try to vectorize the image using Adobe Illustrator or the freeware Inkscape.
  • There is also a Online version for vectorization.
  • You can unpixel without paths as follows: Make a color selection with the magic wand, fill the selected area with "Edit - Fill area".
  • at photos with many different colors you can de-pixelize differently: In Adobe Photoshop choose "Filter - Interference filter - Remove interferences" (The corresponding menu items are available in all good image editing programs, but may be elsewhere in the menu Find). Play around with the setting options until you see a good result.
  • Use one of the blur filters. Try out several variations. Then let the sharpening filter run over it again.

As freeware for image editing be GIMP and Photoscape called. A cheap alternative to the battleship Adobe Photoshop is Adobe Photoshop Elements, which you can get extremely inexpensive (approx. 10 euros). In this combination, the program offers a lot of the possibilities of its big brother, but it cannot do CMYK, which is necessary for offset printing. If you pictures prepare for the Internet, but it is definitely enough.

Avoid the hard work for pictures right away

  • Pay attention to the correct resolution when purchasing images. 72 dpi is sufficient for the Internet, 300 dpi is required for offset printing (flyers etc.). The same is true when scanning images. Because: A bad picture will always be a bad picture. Image information that is not there cannot be conjured up by any program in the world. So de-pixeling is a task that does not always produce suitable results.
  • If you receive images from third parties for printed matter, point out that you need high-resolution files.
  • When creating print media, make sure that images are not scaled more than 15%, otherwise they will become pixelated in the print. The problem does not exist with vector graphics, since they can be created with a vector program (Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape) can be easily scaled to any size, from three millimeters up to ten meters.
