For a number of years now, tax-free and social security-free mini-jobs have been the norm in Germany. This employment model offers several advantages for both employers and employees. Marginally employed persons (450 euro job) have to think about social security. What are the regulations regarding health insurance?

With earnings of 500 euros, compulsory insurance applies, also for health insurance.

Health insurance is compulsory in Germany. In plain language this means: every citizen must have health insurance. Anyone who has a 450-euro job therefore needs health insurance.

450 euro job - flat-rate health insurance contribution

Minor employment (also called Mini job) is regulated by law. Payments of up to 450 euros are exempt from taxes and social security contributions.

  • Employers transfer flat-rate contributions to the health insurance for such employees. Flat-rate contributions are only due if there is no health insurance cover with a private insurance company.
  • As a contribution, the employer has to pay a flat-rate health insurance contribution (13 percent) for commercially employed mini-jobbers. If you work in a private household, it is 5 percent of wages (as of 2013).
  • In addition, lump sums are only possible if the employee does not have health insurance or is not subject to health insurance.

Possibilities of health insurance in the mini job

  • If, in addition to the mini-job, a main occupation subject to social insurance is carried out, there is automatically compulsory insurance in the statutory health insurance (GKV). If the spouse is a member of a statutory health insurance company, the non-contributory family insurance may apply.
  • If the two requirements listed above do not apply, voluntary membership in the GKV or private insurance (PKV) remains. In general, insurance is compulsory if the monthly salary exceeds certain limits (2013 - 450 Euro job).

Disadvantages of marginal employment

For mini jobbers, there are other special features with regard to health insurance.

  • Despite payment of contributions by the employer, there is no entitlement to sickness benefit. In the event of illness, wages can still be paid up to the sixth week. There is no wage replacement by the health insurance company beyond this period.
  • There is no maternity benefit from the health insurance for women. To do this, an application must be submitted to the Federal Insurance Office. Only a small one-time sum is paid out.

Claims to benefits from long-term care insurance do not arise in the case of marginal employment. For this you need to pay your own contributions for a period of at least 60 months within the last ten years.
