Ancient land during the apple blossom
The Altes Land is best known for its beautiful splendor during the apple blossom. No wonder that it is one of the most popular excursion destinations in northern Germany. "Altes Land" - that is the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in Central Europe. Above all apples grow there, but cherries are also grown in large quantities. In any case, the Alte Land is a great destination for the whole family.

Enjoy the apple blossom properly
- Plan the excursion so that you can really experience the old country at full bloom. First the cherries bloom in white, a little later the pink apple blossom sets in. The flowering period extends from the last week of April to the 10th May. There is a flower barometer on the Altes Land homepage that predicts the exact flowering time for each year.
- A hike through the orchards in the sunshine is of course a must. Wear comfortable shoes or walking shoes to avoid blisters and sore feet. A hiking map of the Old Country makes it easier to find your way around the sea of flowers.
- Exercise in the fresh air is known to make you hungry. A picnic among the fruit trees will give you new energy after the hike. Bring a large blanket and a picnic basket with rolls, tea, salads and, of course, lots of fruit.
- Those who like it more lively choose the first weekend in May for the excursion. Because then the flower festival is celebrated in Jork and the flower queen is crowned. There is a lot to see on the stages and a large parade is one of the highlights of the day. In the evening there is still a nice fireworks display.

- You cannot book places in advance; whoever stands at the stop is invited. However, if the 46 seats are occupied, you have to wait for the next cycle touring bus.
- Your trip should definitely take you to Twielenfleth, on the Lühesand peninsula. There is an old lighthouse from 1926 to visit.
Old land - history and culture
- Old Land - it is not only known for its orchards, but also for its pretty villages with their old half-timbered houses. The hike should therefore lead through at least one of the places where you can stop and enjoy the day with coffee and fruit cake.
- Culture lovers shouldn't miss the churches of the Old Country either. Ten in number are spread across the villages and look back on 800 years of history. In some of the churches you can still marvel at organs that are over 500 years old.
- Before you end the day with a beer in an inn, you should stock up on a large portion of apples at one of the fruit farms. You won't find apples so rich in tradition anytime soon, and after all, you don't want to starve to death on the way back.
Where is the land with the wonderful apple blossom?
- The Altes Land stretches along the Elbe, from Sauensiek to Baltje. The North Germans also say: between Hamburg and the North Sea. For your short break, plan a place at the beginning or end of this route.
- There are numerous holiday apartments or small pensions here where you can relax.
- And in between you always have a view of the Elbe. In some places this gives the impression that you are standing by the sea.
- Here you can let your mind wander and simply enjoy the apple blossom in the old country.
