Construction of a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are nothing more than containers through which air can pass and which are filled with a material that can or can bind water. Attracts water. Here's how you can build a simple car dehumidifier:

  1. Take a plastic jar with a tight-fitting lid, for example a freezer box.
  2. Drill a few holes in each side wall. These should be approx. Be 10 mm tall. Make sure that the holes are only in the top quarter of the can.
  3. Fill the can 3/4 full with charcoal or cat litter. When filling, clamp a strip of blotting paper between the filling and the wall of the can. The strip must be approx. Protrude 2 cm over the filling.
  4. Put the can in a suitable place in the car.
  5. The inside of the car is wet - what to do?

If your car is wet on the inside, it is not only uncomfortable, but in the long run ...

  6. Replace the fill when the paper feels wet.

This is what you should pay attention to with car dehumidifiers

  • Find a can that fits well under one of the seats. This means that the dehumidifier can stay in the car at all times and is not a problem. In this respect, self-made dehumidifiers are superior to the ones you buy.
  • Charcoal is suitable as a filling, but not pressed briquettes. If you use cat litter, use a betonite-based product. If you use clumping litter, the clumping is an additional indicator of the need for replacement.
  • There is no need to dispose of charcoal and cat litter, you can dry the material in the oven or in the sun and use it again.
  • Check regularly that the blotting paper is dry. If it gets wet, it is high time to replace the filling. Since you should check the paper at least once a week, it is important that the dehumidifier is easily accessible.
  • Do not use salt for the dehumidifier in the vehicle, not even the refill packs that can be bought for dehumidifiers or ready-made salt-based dehumidifiers. These devices create a sharp saline solution that could easily be spilled in the car. This solution is difficult to remove from the flooring. It also promotes corrosion of the sheet metal.
