What does post mean?
Post is the modern, Germanized expression for sending messages and contributions in online forums. In the meantime, however, the term is also used elsewhere.
Post means "send"
- "Posten" is an Anglicism, that is, a Germanized word. Therefore, when explaining the word, try to derive the meaning from the English first.
- English dictionaries translate the verb (to) post as send, send, send, etc. Underline the meaning by pointing out that the German word der Post also appears in English (post office) and the post also sends things.
- The easiest way to explain the fact that it is an Anglicism is with the ending. "Posten" with the ending -en is a German ending, but the word itself comes from English. Anglicisms can often be derived in this way.
The word in the internet age
- In the age of the Internet, however, another meaning of the word post has developed: Write / send a post. You can clarify this by stating that this word translation also made it into German dictionaries. This enabled the German culture of the Internet to assign a new - if not completely alien - meaning to an English verb.
- The word is mainly used in Internet forums, where it says that you have written a contribution and then submitted it so that forum visitors can now read it. You can easily make this clear, as many Internet forums actually use the word "Post" for individual posts in a forum and mark them as such. However, the word isn't limited to forums.
- Also in social networks - like Facebook - "Post" means "write something" and "share something" (with other users of the social network). So you can z. B. Post a short text, but also a link to one Video or a photo, which can then be viewed by other network users.
- Posting always has a social component, as there must be a recipient of the post (contribution). You can also use this to clarify the original English meaning of the word.
