Easy folding instructions - you should know these basic shapes

For each of the following folding instructions you will need a square-shaped exercise paper. The basic forms are based on the light "book":

  • The "book" is the simplest of all folding instructions, with which many figures begin. The book is created by folding two opposite edges onto each other. This results in a break in between. In some origami- Instructions require you to have two middle fractions that cross each other. Here you need to fold the book twice perpendicular to each other.
  • The "handkerchief" is a folding shape based on the book. To do this, first fold the book and then fold the short edge again onto the opposite short edge. This is how the handkerchief is folded (you know from ironing).
  • In many instructions you need the so-called. "Closet" that actually has two doors. To do this, first fold the book, but put the fold back again. Now fold the two opposite edges at the middle break - the cabinet doors are created. In some folding instructions, however, these broken edges are opened again so that orientation lines are obtained.
  • A "staircase", sometimes called a "fan", is created by first folding the book. Now fold the long edge on top of the middle break. Turn the work over and repeat the last step. This creates two valley folds and one mountain fold. By further subdividing the four rectangles, you can add more steps to the stairs.

Other origami shapes - you will also need these frequently

The following origami shapes are also based on a basic shape, namely the easy-to-fold "headscarf":

  • The "headscarf" is one of the easier folding instructions. But quite complex basic shapes can be created from it. For the headscarf, the two opposite corners of a square sheet are folded onto each other. This creates the diagonal break. For some folding forms you need both diagonal breaks, which then cross in the middle of the sheet.
  • A "tent" is created by folding the headscarf and then laying lace on lace.
  • The "dragon" is also often needed as a starter for origami. Here you first fold the headscarf, but fold it back again. Then lay the resulting diagonal break vertically in front of you. Now fold the two corners on the left and right as smaller triangles to the diagonal break - the kite shape is created.
  • The letter, which is actually almost an origami figure in its own right, is a little more complicated. To do this, fold both diagonal and middle folds and put them back again and again. Now fold all four corners to the center you have created. A double letter is created by first folding the letter and turning your work. Now fold another (smaller) letter. Do you know the structure? It's the well-known heaven or hell figure. It just has to be brought into shape a little.
