Google Books is valued by many users as a portal for digital books. The question is repeatedly asked how the works can be displayed in full. Copyright meets digital progress.

The thought behind Google Books

  • at Google Books has set itself the task of completely digitizing books and making them available for searching by entering keywords. Google itself usually scanned all of the pages of the works, but only partially displays them.
  • With this work it should be possible to reach numerous books with a few mouse clicks and thus to save going to libraries. Long waiting times for deliveries of printed papers should also be avoided, which is something that students in particular can benefit from.

The problem with full viewing

  • If it were up to Google and numerous users, you could read through every scanned work in full in Google Books. However, publishers and authors are right to disagree with the free and complete display of entire books.
  • Google therefore only has the right to fade in individual strings from the books and thus give you, the reader, the opportunity to get to know the works. If you then want to read the books in full, you usually have to purchase the digital or printed version.
  • Yet you find that you can read some books in full - how is that possible? Depending on the legislation, many works are no longer protected by copyright after several decades. Thus they are free and can be read not only by you, but by everyone.
  • Read books in Google - that's how it works

You can find many books, especially classic ones and quite a few older ones, on Google Books ...

  • This applies e.g. B. for classics like Romeo and Juliet and Tom Sawyer's adventures. These are freely available and can be conveniently displayed on your computer or tablet - free of charge. If you want to have these in printed form, you still have to pay for paper and processing, despite the free content.

If you are ever unsure about a work, please contact the author or the publisher by e-mail or by phone. In this way you can be sure that the work found is actually protected by copyright or that it is perhaps offered for free reading. This is particularly recommended if you are searching for books not only via Google Books but also generally on the web.
