Sewing yourself for beginners

What you need:

• sturdy fabric for outside
• Lining fabric
• yarn
• Sewing machine (but it can also be done by hand)

Self-made things are always something personal. Even if they don't always work out right away, they are often a lot of fun. If you are a beginner and want to sew something yourself, you should just start off. A beach bag is well suited for beginners to sew.

A beach bag for beginners

1. You can sew a beach bag yourself from straight pieces. Your bag should be spacious, practical and durable. The bag described here should be 40 centimeters wide and 35 centimeters high like a bag in landscape format. The sides will be 10 centimeters wide. The pocket remains open at the top. The inside of the bag is lined. The handles are sewn on the outside. Use thicker cotton, brightly striped, floral or whatever you like. 2. Cut a large piece of the sturdy fabric for the outside of the bag, measuring 42 centimeters wide and 90 inches long, and two small pieces for the sides, 12 inches wide and 40 inches long.
3. Cut the thin fabric for the lining, once 43 centimeters by 80 centimeters and twice 13 centimeters by 35 centimeters. Scantle all sides with the zigzag stitch of the sewing machine.
4. Now put the three parts together with pins like a bag. First one side and then the other. Make sure that you place the fabric sides that are facing out on top of each other. So when you sew, you have the insides up. If you are unsure as a beginner, first baste everything together with large stitches. So see if it's right. Then sew with a straight stitch.

5. Now repeat the same thing with the lining material. Now sew the outer pocket made of the sturdy fabric around a centimeter at the top.
6. Then turn the sewn parts over so that you now have two Bags that fit into each other. The seams collide. If you want, you can iron the seams apart first. But it doesn't have to be.
7. The inner lining pocket is shorter than the outer pocket. Fold the outer one inwards (by about 3 to 4 centimeters) and pin this envelope so that you can sew the inner and outer pockets together when you then sew. Now your beach bag is almost ready.
8. Finally, sew the fabric straps on the outside. Feel free to use the entire 35 centimeters height to sew on. The handles are an additional decorative element and at the same time also securely attached. The length of the straps depends on how long you want the handles to be. You need twice the height of your bag plus the desired length of the handle.
9. When you sew on the straps last, as described here, you sew the lining and outer fabric together. If you don't like this, you'll need to sew the straps on before joining the lining and the outer fabric. But don't forget that you still have to put four centimeters of the outer pocket inside.

• Maybe you want an inside pocket for your cell phone or wallet? Cut out the required size from the lining and don't forget the seam allowance. It is best to sew on these inner pockets before you sew the three parts for the lining together.
