School free because of snow
If you have children who are going to school, you need to make sure that they get there on time. If this is not possible due to snow or other weather conditions, you should excuse your child in good time. Your child will then have a few hours or the whole day off, but will have to make up for what they have missed.
School-age children must have the classes visit regularly, and it is your duty as a parent to ensure that your child fulfills this duty. You can of course excuse your child if they are ill or prevented for another important reason. It is also possible to apply for an exemption for family celebrations or, in exceptional cases, for holidays. If the weather conditions prevent your child from reaching school, for example when there is snow or severe weather, there are special regulations.
When the school is closed because of snow
- There is also in Germany Regions where a lot of snow falls in winter. In extreme weather conditions, places can be cut off from the outside world. Then of course there will be no public transport.
- The school may be closed due to snow or other weather-related reasons. Then your child is free. If it is still of primary school age, you will have to organize the care yourself. The school has the right to close and send the children home for valid reasons.
Set your child off because of bad weather
- You too have the right to release your child due to bad weather. If it snowed heavily in the morning or if the road is frozen over because of freezing rain, your child can stay at home. Check the danger and then decide whether you can be responsible for getting to school.
- Call the school and let them know. Inquire about how other parents react. Perhaps the weather will ease during the day so that your child can go to school later.

Always be aware of compulsory school attendance, but also keep your child's safety in mind. In case of doubt, safety comes first, of course. You don't have to put your child at risk just that they can go to school. Otherwise, you should also keep in mind that your child will have to make up for what has been missed once school has taken place.
