A year abroad should be well prepared. Organizations such as the YFU will help you find a school and host family and will also be available to advise you if you have any problems. For a successful and smooth school year abroad, the YFU takes care of all the important steps from registration to the journey home.

Registration for the year abroad

  • For the school year abroad, simply apply online directly to YFU. You either fill out the online form, for which a link with your access data will be sent to you by e-mail, or the application forms will be sent to you by post. Both forms have the same content and ask about your interests and motivation in addition to the general data.
  • It is important here to fill out the registration form honestly, as the YFU will later use this information to find the right host family. You will also need to enclose other documents, such as a report from your school.

Getting to know each other personally during the job interview

  • Once you have submitted all of the application documents, the organization will invite you to an interview near you. You will normally receive the appointment three weeks after receipt of the application.
  • Here you will discuss in a group with three to five other young people, for example about different situations that can arise during an exchange year. The YFU also gets a personal picture of each applicant in an individual interview.
  • Doing a year abroad in Japan - that's how it works

Would you like to give your child a year abroad? Did your child choose Japan ...

  • Here, too, it is important to be honest, as the employees want to get an authentic picture of the applicants.

The acceptance or rejection of the YFU

  • If this hurdle is over, the YFU will inform you within two to three weeks of the acceptance or rejection. If you are accepted, you will now find out in which country you will spend the year. It can happen that you are selected for a year abroad, but the places in your desired countries are already occupied. In this case, the YFU will ask you to choose another country.
  • Now all you have to do is sign the participation contract with your parents and nothing stands in the way of your year abroad.

The organization around the stay abroad

The following points are completely organized by the YFU:

  • The organization of conferences especially for the preparation and follow-up of the year abroad. In addition, the YFU organizes seminars in the host country.
  • Insurance and the booking of flights, the costs are included in the fee to be paid.
  • The search and placement of a suitable host family and school.
  • Supervision of the exchange students and their parents before and during the stay abroad.

There are two things you need to take care of yourself:

  • To get your visa. To do this, contact the embassy of your target country in good time Germany.
  • A valid passport.
  • Find out about required vaccinations and similar preventive measures as soon as possible. You can find detailed advice on vaccinations at the Robert Koch Institute or you can visit the nearest tropical institute.

The YFU organizes everything related to your year abroad. If your application is successful, you only have to take care of your visa, any vaccinations and doctor visits and of course packing. The YFU prepares you and your parents for the stay abroad and also offers further support after your return.
