"My horse has pimples!" ─ If you have had to make this statement recently, you are certainly looking for an effective solution to the unsightly wheals. A clogged sebum gland in horses manifests itself as a fingernail or coin-sized skin nodule, which is particularly visible on summer fur. These can also cause pressure points in the saddle position. Many vets therefore recommend cutting away the blocked glands. But does it really have to be?

The wheals often appear on the neck and in the saddle position.

What are the causes of a blocked sebum gland?

  • If the skin nodules appear in the saddle or belt position, this is a first indication of their origin. Often the saddle pad is not breathable enough, and sweat and heat build up when you do it ride underneath. This irritates the skin, moisture and heat form the ideal breeding ground for germs.
  • Dead skin cells and excessive sebum production can also hinder the drainage of sebum from the glands.
  • Bad cleaning also promotes the wheals, because dust, sweat and flakes of skin clog the pores.

  • Prevention is better than cure. Do without several layers of different saddlecloths and pads. If your horse is prone to chafing, you have to solve this in the long term with a better fitting saddle. Gel pads also create an uncomfortable climate under the saddle thanks to their impermeable coating. Often they have lambskin pads that lie directly on the horse's back, i.e. not between the saddlecloth and Saddle, a positive effect against the clogged sebum, as they absorb sweat and dry the horse's back keep.
  • If one or the other sebum gland is already clogged, it helps to dab the affected areas with an ointment from the pharmacy. The lumps then open after a few days and the excess secretion can drain away. It will also help to cleanse the affected areas with a gentle soap every now and then.
