Participles as adjective and adverb - this is how they are to be used

In the following you will learn what Participle I and Participle II are and how they are used in a sentence.

  • The participle I (or present participle) is formed from the basic form of a verb. Add a “d” to the ending of an infinitive to form the participle. The present participle of “to fall” is therefore “falling”.
  • You can use participle as an adjective in a sentence. For example, you could create a sentence like: “The falling apple is red.” In this sentence, “falling” is an adjective that refers to “apple”.
  • The present participle can also be used as an adverb. In the sentence “A man is rolling on the floor, screaming”, the verb “wallowing” is determined by the participle.

  • The past participle is also called the past participle. In order to form the past participle, you have to put the syllable “ge” in front of the word stem and then add “-t” or “-et” or, in the case of irregular verbs, the syllable “-en”.
  • With the participle II the compound times are formed in the active. Both the perfect perfect (“The mouse ate the cheese”) and past perfect (“The mouse had the cheese eaten ”) and future tense II (“ The mouse will have eaten the cheese ”) with the past participle educated.
  • Also with the participle II all forms are formed in the passive voice. For example, forms in the passive voice could look like this: “I am seen”, “You will be loved” or “It was found”.
