Put together the materials for your bow tie

  • First, find a nice fabric for the bow tie you want to sew. It can be brightly colored or heavily patterned, only with the fabric thickness you should make sure that it is as thin as possible. Remember that for the bow tie you sometimes have to sew the fabric twice or four times, which is much easier if the material is thin.
  • Take your measurement, measure the length of the fly tape with a tape measure and add 1.5 cm for the sewing edges. Think carefully about where you want your bow tie to be in order to choose the right length of the ribbon.
  • Think about how big you want your bow tie to be, because you will need to cut the fabric accordingly before you start with the sew can begin.
  • If you choose silky tie fabric for your bow tie, it makes sense to also use a flow-like underside fabric to be added so that the fabric layers do not stick to each other in the finished bow tie, but rather loosely let rise.
  • Cut the pieces of fabric for your bow tie. For the bow tie, start with a piece of fabric measuring 4 x 20 cm, and cut the length and width of the "collar" individually.
  • Tailor a black bow tie for tuxedos - this is how it works

Do you or your partner have a tuxedo or another fancy suit and ...

  • if you use a backing fabric for your bow tie, cut it accordingly.
  • The center piece of your bow tie should have the dimensions 4.5 X 5 cm, cut the fabric for this too.

How to sew your bow tie

  1. Take the piece of fabric that will form your bow tie and fold it in half, right side to right. Place the lower fabric on the wrong side and baste everything with basting needles.
  2. Cut off a small piece at the corners of the closed end so that you can round off the corners as you sew.
  3. Now sew these three layers together on the outer edge. Start at the lower, open side and end accordingly at the upper, open side.
  4. It is important that you leave one short side open, because through this you now have to pull the developing fly from left to right.
  5. Now fold the two short ends together towards the middle so that they overlap slightly.
  6. Sew these together with solid small cross stitches. Make sure that you do not sew on the lower layer of fabric, which will be the visible side of the bow tie after finishing the sewing work.
  7. Now bend the fly fabric once in the middle on the long side, place edge on edge.
  8. Now you have to center this piece of fabric over a length of approx. Sew together 5 cm. Use a sewing machine for this, otherwise it will be very difficult to sew correctly through the layers of fabric.
  9. Take this fly part and now pull it apart. You will see that you have given the bow tie the typical shape of the bow tie with the seam you have just sewn.

Sew the center piece and ribbon of the bow tie like this

  1. Take the fabric for the ribbon and do exactly the same as you did for the bow tie. Baste the lower fabric and sew everything together inside out.
  2. Now comes a tricky part, you have to pull the fly tape right side out. Take a pen or other long and thin tool and start pushing the fabric inward until you have pushed the entire ribbon right side out and then pulled it.
  3. Sew the edges in a slightly triangular shape towards the inside and also sew on a small Velcro fastener so that you can close the fly tape afterwards.
  4. Now take the fabric for the middle part, sew it together as already described, first inside out and then turn it inside out.
  5. Now take the fly, place it in the center of the fly tape and guide the middle part around both of the center. Sew the middle section on the back; you can vary the scope of the bow tie width by letting the middle section overlap to a greater or lesser extent.

Your bow tie, individually designed, is now ready.
