What you need:

  • Iron-on Lamifix (or waterproof coated fabric)

  • Tape measure
  • Paper and pen
  • sewing machine
  • Filling or foam
  • Possibly. Iron and craft knife

Sewing a changing mat in the jungle design - instructions

  1. First, take a measurement of the area where you want the changing mat in the jungle design to be later and decide on a thickness.
  2. If you want to make a particularly secure support, divide the surface into three sections and design the two outer side parts as wedges. You can do this by planning the two outer side edges about 7 cm high and letting them fall off towards the middle to the thickness of the overlay.
  3. Cut out the underside of the overlay from the selected fabric with the measured width and length. Leave a 1 cm protrusion on all edges.
  4. Now cut the three parts for the top from the fabric as well. Here, too, you need a protrusion for the seams.
  5. Finally, you need strips of fabric for the all-round border that connects the top and bottom.
  6. Sew the changing mat

Perhaps you will soon need a changing mat if you have offspring ...

  7. Connect all the pieces of fabric with seams, but leave one seam open for the time being so that the filling can be inserted. If you want to use polyfill, a small opening is sufficient; if you are using foam, leave a long seam open.
  8. Put the filling in.
  9. Seal the open seam with a mattress stitch.
  10. If you have already used coated fabric, your jungle-look changing mat is ready. In the case of uncoated fabric, you can finally iron on Lamifix, so that the overlay can be wiped off very practically.

Tips for making a changing table mat

  • If you opt for a filling made of foam and a coating with Lamifix, make sure when buying that the foam can survive the ironing temperature.
  • If you want to stuff an overlay with polyfill, you should use as much cotton as possible. If the filling is too low, your baby will later be uncomfortable.
  • If you want the overlay not only to be wiped off later, but also to be washed thoroughly, sew in a zipper. So you can easily remove the filling material.
  • Can't find a suitable fabric with a jungle motif? Then just get creative yourself and design plain-colored fabric with the help of textile markers. Lianas, jungle animals and maybe a few more flowers - you have a very personal and individual baby item and swaddling becomes fun.
