It is important to protect the sensitive finishing point at the base against frost and winter sun. Pile up your roses to make them winterproof. That means you put about four to six inches high of soil, leaves, or mulch around the trunk. This is particularly important with new plantings.

With ground-covering dwarf roses, it is difficult to get to the base. Put fir branches or straw over the plants to protect them from the cold wind. If tall roses and shrub roses need additional protection from the cold, place fir branches between the branches.

The crown of tree roses always needs winter protection, as their grafting point is at the base of the crown and not on the ground. Cover the finish with a strip of jute or cold protection fleece. Then wrap the entire crown in jute or fleece. Do not use plastic sheeting or perforated material, as sheeting promotes the development of rot and fungal infections.
