For a giant pumpkin, the Hokkaido pumpkin is not that big after all. Above all, however, it differs from many other pumpkins in the question of whether the peel is edible or not.

  • Hokkaido pumpkins usually weigh one to two kilograms, so they are not "giants". The skin is usually orange in color, but it can also be dark green. It is the peel that distinguishes the plant from most other pumpkins. It is not thick and hard, but very thin and therefore easily edible. It also becomes very soft when cooked.
  • The pulp of the pumpkin is orange, not very fibrous and comparatively firm. The taste is reminiscent of nuts or chestnuts. The Hokkaido pumpkin also has seeds, but these must be removed before processing.
