That is what we mean by norms

Norms and values are two different terms that should be kept apart.

  • A norm is behavior that is considered normal and desirable in a society. Social norms regulate togetherness and interpersonal relationships.
  • There are rules of conduct that offer the individual an orientation and prevent him from acting out of his inner impulse.
  • Anyone who acts in accordance with a standard or behaves according to the norms of society, fulfills their expectation. This means that the individual is expected to be familiar with the norms of society.
  • Standards can vary from country to country. Where in one country it is considered greedy to grasp what is given with both hands, in other countries it is considered impolite and disdainful not to do so.
  • Social values - definition

Every society has values, norms and rules - living together would be different ...

  • Norms are also weighted differently. While it is hardly noticeable these days when someone cuts his potatoes with a knife, Most people are likely to find it very uncomfortable when someone smacks their lips and loudly in a restaurant belching.
  • The extreme extreme of breaking the norm is crime.

That is what defines values

While norms dictate how the individual should behave in which situation, values mostly have a moral character and are not prescriptive, but rather desirable.

  • It is not a matter of rules of conduct, but rather of qualities or ideals that are ascribed to a person or a situation.
  • There are values that have general validity in a society, for example honesty or consideration for other people. However, an individual can set values for himself by which he wants to live or which he at least strives for. Honesty doesn't have to be one of them.
  • So values have an inherent moral concept. They are often the basis of a norm, for example the value "consideration" is the prerequisite for the norm that you shouldn't bump into anyone, but Norms can also establish themselves completely independently of them: Nobody is helped if someone bites their potatoes with a fork instead of a knife divided.
  • There are also values that cannot be traced back to morality, but which are considered valuable for the individual or society. These include, for example, freedom or prosperity.
