Dahlias do not bloom until late and are therefore a nice autumn decoration for the in a tub terrace. Their flowering period begins in summer and lasts until the first frost.

Nice varieties in the bucket

  • Dahlias are very suitable for planting in pots, but some varieties grow very large. The low-growing varieties are therefore better suited for the terrace, because they do not need a bucket that is too large. Despite their relatively low growth, such varieties also produce large flowers with a diameter of up to ten centimeters.
  • Choose the height of the bucket to match the height of the selected variety. The diameter of the planter should be about half the height of the plant so that it will stand securely later when the plant is fully grown.
  • Plant the dahlia bulb about four inches deep in your tub. If you want to put several tubers in a pot, the distance between the tubers should also be half the height.
  • Dahlias need a lot of light so that they bloom abundantly, so choose a sunny spot on the terrace as possible. Water regularly, but not too much, and make sure that excess water can drain out of the bucket. In a planter, you should provide your dahlias with the necessary nutrients through regular fertilization.

Hibernate dahlias properly

Dahlia bulbs are not hardy and must therefore be dug up in autumn to overwinter them in a frost-free place. Even with the dahlias that you have planted in a tub, you should take the tubers out of the pot and store them in a dry place for the winter.

  1. To do this, carefully take the tubers out of the bucket and remove the soil and the leaves that are still there.
  2. An ideal wintering room has a temperature of around 5 ° C and a good exchange of air so that the tubers do not rot. You should therefore ventilate a closed room every now and then.
  3. It is best to place the dahlia bulbs on a wire mesh so that they can dry sufficiently from below. There they should be protected from sunlight.
  4. Turn the tubers every now and then, removing any rotten parts.
  5. At the end of winter, you can plant your dahlia bulbs again in a bucket with fresh potting soil and place them on a light-colored windowsill, where they will soon sprout again. But you can also wait until spring if you want to put your plants outside right away. In this case, however, wait until no more night frosts are to be expected, a safer time is after the ice saints in mid-May.
