There are four types of papillae:
- The mushroom-shaped papillae can be warm or distinguish between hot and cold. So they are used to perceive temperature.
- With the thread-like papillae, the tongue can fulfill its task as a tactile organ.
- Then there are wart-shaped and leaf-shaped papillae, which respond to the sense of taste. The different taste qualities are perceived in different parts of the tongue. While the tip of the tongue tastes particularly sweet, the taste buds on the edges of the tongue are primarily calibrated for salty and sour foods. We taste bitter in the rear area.
