How to care for your columnar cactus
- Like many other cactus species, the columnar cactus comes from quite dry areas, where there is often no rainfall for a long time. It also has the ability to store water so that it can survive long dry periods. This means that you should water your plant very sparingly. When in doubt, pour yours cactus rather too little than too much, because the risk of drowning it is much greater than that of it drying up. Therefore, if you go on vacation for two or three weeks, you don't have to hire someone to water your cactus.
- However, the fact that a cactus can go without water for a long time doesn't mean that you should forget about it entirely. When the soil in the pot has dried out again, water it and make sure you add water, that is still in the planter after about ten minutes, throw away so that the roots don't start to rot.
- To ensure that your column cactus is well taken care of, give it some cactus fertilizer every now and then. If he needs a larger pot over time, it is best to use special cactus soil for this too.
The location for your cactus
- Choose a location that is as sunny as possible on the windowsill, as long as it is not too big for this. Otherwise it should be as bright as possible. In the summer months he is very grateful for fresh air and direct sun, so put him quietly on the balcony or on the terrace. Make sure, however, that you choose a location where it does not get wet when it rains.
- A columnar cactus can get a little crooked quickly because it always grows in the direction of the light. So that it develops evenly in all directions, you should turn it every now and then.
- If you have the opportunity, you should put your plant in a cool room with a temperature of around 10 ° C for the winter months. Then it can keep its natural hibernation and should hardly be watered at all during this time. In principle, the cactus can also stay in the warm apartment all year round, but then you should continue to water it in winter.
