Remove weeds on terrace

A natural one terrace is an ideal seat. However, weed plants and moss tend to settle between paving stones and terrace stones.

Grout scrapers or grout brushes are used

Of course, you can try hand weeding mosses and weeds in the joints with a small rake. However, this is not advisable, because in most cases the infested joints are quite narrow, so that you will only reach your goal with difficulty.

Get a grout scraper from a gardening specialist. This should have a handy handle, preferably made of wood, and a sharp and thin cutting edge. A sturdy joint brush on a long handle is also well suited for combating weeds in joints. Ultimately, your personal preference decides when you buy.

Use the joint scraper to clean the grooves between the terrace slabs. The joint scraper is guided vertically along the edge of the plate and then weeds and moss are lifted out with the cutting edge.

The joint brush is easy to use. With a little effort you rub the unpleasant settlement out of the joint. This works very well with moss. However, some plants such as dandelions or stubborn grass are not root-deep, but only removed superficially and then grow back.

Clean your terrace piece by piece. Sweep this in between weed together with the soil. Fill the resulting depressions with fine joint sand, which is carefully swept in. It is also possible to sludge the sand with water. This will fill the joint more tightly.

Removing the weeds with a grout scraper or grout brush is both laborious and time-consuming. Unfortunately, the success is not permanent. New weed seeds will settle in the sand. It is best to remove the weeds on the patio once or twice a summer.

Eliminate weeds with technology

You can achieve a lot with a high-pressure cleaner, especially with mosses and lichen. The high water pressure not only removes dirt from the tiles on the terrace, but also rinses smaller plants, lichen and moss growth from the joints. But here, too, the following applies: plants that are well or deeply rooted will only catch you superficially - they will sprout again.

You can also remove unwanted growth on your terrace with a gas burner. The upper parts of the plants will be burned by the flame, but most of the time you will not get the entire root. The advantage is that you operate the device while standing on a stick and do not have to bend down. First try out an inconspicuous spot to see how your paving reacts to the effects of the flames.

Use weed killer on the patio

There are numerous chemical agents for weed control in specialist shops, including moss killers. These include well-known herbicides such as Roundup and glyphosate. You have to decide for yourself whether you want to work with such agents on the house or near other plants. Be sure to follow the instructions of the knowledgeable sales force as well as the instructions for use for these weed killers.

A simple but also very effective home remedy should also be mentioned, namely vinegar essence. Sprinkle a few drops of the essence on individual deep roots such as dandelions. Again, you should test your plates on the terrace for compatibility. Some natural stones change color.

After a few days, the shoots turn brown and can be easily removed with the joint scraper. You will likely have to repeat the procedure again to get the roots as well. Do not work wastefully with the vinegar, because the next rain may wash the remains of the acid into your beds.

Targeted weed prevention - tips

What works well on beds and areas in the garden is not possible on a terrace: laying weed control. However, you can try to give the weeds as little attack surface as possible, especially in the joints.

In addition to sterile joint sand, there are special paving joint mortars. Both prevent weed seeds from sprouting. However, if sand or mortar is covered with a thin layer of earth or dust after a few years, seeds brought in by the wind will also give up there.

Nature takes everything back. Regardless of whether you are weeding mechanically with a joint scraper or brush, using technical means to tackle weeds or even resort to chemical weed control. After a while, your terrace will need to be cleaned again.

By the way: If you only bother the towering parts of the weeds, but otherwise a greening of the Panel joints are welcome, then simply cut the excess weed parts with a Lawn shears off. This procedure must also be repeated every few weeks.
