The first time you drive a car with a manual transmission, you will likely find shifting a little difficult. With a little practice you will understand the interaction of clutch, circuit and accelerator but learn very quickly.

This is how you learn to shift gears in a car

  • Before you learn how to switch, you should understand what it is all about. In a car, the power is transmitted from engine to the drive wheels via a manual transmission. The connection from the motor to the gearbox is made by means of the coupling.
  • Different gear ratios are selected in the transmission by shifting. In first gear, the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels is very large. This means that the car only drives slowly even at a high engine speed. In the highest gear, on the other hand, the vehicle reaches a high speed at the same engine speed.
  • You must therefore always use first gear to start off. As soon as the car starts moving, you can upshift up the next gears in sequence.
  • The easiest way to learn how to change gears while driving is in practical use.

Learning to switch in practice

  1. You first switch to idle. The gear stick is therefore in the middle position. Then press the clutch and start the engine.
  2. Then engage first gear. To do this, press the gear stick to the front left. By overcoming a small amount of resistance, you will feel that first gear is engaged.
  3. Then you accelerate a little and let the clutch come on. This will cause your car to start moving slowly.
  4. As soon as you accelerate a little more, the vehicle accelerates. Then press the clutch and at the same time take some gas off. To do this, pull the gearshift lever back to the left. You have now shifted into second gear.
  5. You then release the clutch and notice that your car is going much faster than in first gear. You can also shift into the next gears in the same way.

You will see that you very quickly learn the sequences of movements that are required to shift gears. After a few exercises, you don't have to think about it anymore.
