Important information about morels.

  • Morels are the mushrooms that are very widespread and can be found in early spring. In autumn, when most of the mushroom pickers go out, you will rarely find morels in autumn. The question may not have to be "Where do morels grow?" but "When do morels grow."
  • The other reason mushroom pickers wonder where the morels can be is because you can stand in front of the mushrooms without seeing them. The honeycomb head is not very noticeable in most environments. The morels are there, you just overlook them.

Good places where morels grow

  • Morels are so-called saprobiontic soil fungi, which means that they live on dead organic material. Therefore, you will usually find morels where there is dead wood, for example on or near bark places in forests.
  • Wherever there is old organic material, there are places where morels grow. Watch out for leaves and twigs that are not being removed; these can be overgrown gardens and parks or just wasteland.
  • Inquire about lime-rich but nutrient-poor soils, because these soils are what the morels need. Perhaps a forestry office can provide you with information.
  • Mushrooms in spring - tips for collecting

For the normal mushroom picker in this country, the mushroom season really doesn't start until ...

  • Experts do not seem to agree on where morels are particularly common. Some swear by poplars, others by larches, and it is said of the pine that morels do not grow there. However, other experts claim that morels also grow on pine mulch. Presumably this is very different, but dead wood is definitely necessary for morels to grow.
  • Morels are not necessarily forest mushrooms, wherever wood rots, morels also feel good, they can also be forest edges, but also railway embankments, areas of old mines or coal heaps. Take a look at forest fire areas from last year, these are also places where morels often grow.
