Contact lenses: different strengths than glasses
If you know the strength of your glasses, you also know the strength of your contact lenses? They think! Both visual aids have different strengths or can have different strengths. A visit to the optician is therefore almost inevitable for the determination.
Contact lenses and glasses - different strengths
Many people believe theirs contact lenses have the same strength as your glasses. That is not right. Most of the time, the strength of the glasses differs from that of the lenses. This depends on various factors:
- For one thing, it is the opposite of the contact lens glasses directly on the eye rests. The poor eyesight is corrected directly on the eye. It is possible that the contact lens power is lower than the power of the glasses. Among other things, this is due to the tear film that is located between the lens and the eye. The incidence of light also plays a role. In general, one can say: the greater the visual impairment, the greater the difference between the lenses and the glasses.
- In addition, the difference between spectacle and contact lens power depends on the cylinder and the astigmatism (if any). It is therefore very important that you do not just buy contact lenses of the same power as your glasses.
Let the strength determine
- Of course there is the possibility to adjust the contact lens power yourself to calculate. This goes online. However, you should note that you not only need to know your glasses values, but also the type of lens. In addition, this online determination is not exactly accurate. You should only use this method in an emergency, i.e. when you need to get lenses quickly.
- However, if you want to be on the safe side, it is better to have the optician determine the different strengths. It is best to ask your local optician how the lenses are determined (sometimes this is done over two days). Of course, you can also choose to have the lens power determined by an ophthalmologist.
- The optician can also tell you whether and which contact lenses are suitable for your eye. For example, if your eyes are dry, "conventional" lenses can be uncomfortable to wear.

Important: Do not joke with your eyes. Let your lens power as well as the power of your glasses be determined exactly. Don't experiment around. This is the only way to ensure good wearing comfort and healthy wearing of the lenses.
