What are the dictyosomes?

  • The dictyosomes or Golgi apparatus - named after the discoverer - belong to the cell organelles of the eukaryotic cell. These include, for example, the mitochondria, the lysosomes, the ribosomes and many more.
  • Each cell has small functional subunits that have different tasks. These are the cell organelles.
  • The dictyosomes consist of several biomembrane stacks that do not touch. Nonetheless, the constriction and fusion of smaller membrane balls results in an exchange and transport between the individual stacks. The membrane is very similar to the cell membrane in its structure.

The function of the Golgi apparatus

  • The dictyosomes are part of the protein formation in the cell. In them, the proteins that are formed in the cell organelle of the endoplasmic reticulum are modified and then distributed in the cell to their target locations.
  • The finished proteins reach the Golgi apparatus from the endoplasmic reticulum via membrane vesicles. The enzymes that subsequently change the proteins are located in its membrane stacks. Some modifications take place before that in the endoplasmic reticulum.

  • For example, the glycosylation of proteins is already started there and completed in the dictyosome by glycosyl transferases. In addition, amino acid sequences or the like are attached to the ends of the proteins, with the aid of which they are sent to their target locations in the cell. For example, proteins that belong in the lysosomes receive a mannose-6-phosphate receptor.
  • The Golgi apparatus also has the function of sulfation and O-glycosylation. The attachment of lipids and sulfur bridges occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum.
