Can perfume go bad?

Do you love perfumes but don't dare to buy different fragrances because you are afraid that they will go bad before you have used them? In fact, perfumes can change, but there are tricks you can use to delay expiration.

When does a scent go bad?

Of course, a perfume doesn't go bad like an expired food. It does not mold and does not rot. However, it is possible that the scent changes and suddenly no longer smells nice. However, this usually only happens after 12 to 36 months, as fragrances contain a lot of alcohol, which prevents the goods from expiring early. You can tell how long your fragrance will last by a mark under the bottle (sometimes the mark is also on the label). There you will discover a small jar that is reminiscent of a cream pot. Below is a number, for example 36. This number shows how many months the perfume can be kept and can be used without hesitation.

This is how perfume can be stored properly

  • So that a perfume does not expire and can go bad so quickly, it is best if you store it in a cool place. The bathroom is usually not suitable for storing fragrance bottles, as it is usually warm and humid there. It is better to keep perfumes in the bedroom, where there is often and a lot of ventilation.
  • It is also better for the fragrance if it is stored in the dark. Here, too, the bedroom offers advantages: Simply place your favorite fragrances in the wardrobe. It is not advisable to line up the bottles in front of the bathroom mirror. Although this has optical advantages, the heat and light also ensure that it "goes bad" more quickly.
  • However, it is safest if you always keep the perfume bottle tightly closed in the original packaging. This guarantees a long and intense fragrance experience.

Attention: cheap perfume usually evaporates faster than expensive fragrances and also does not have such a long shelf life.
