Returnable return bottles and return
If you want to hand in your returnable returnable bottles at a drinks dealer or in the supermarket, in rare cases the return may not be accepted. You can find out why this can be the case here.
One-way deposit and returnable deposit
When it comes to bottle deposits in Germany, there are basically two different types of deposit:
- On the one hand, there is a one-way deposit on certain returnable bottles, which is 25 cents.
- After being returned, these bottles are completely dismantled into their respective components and then usually processed again into bottles or other products.
- Disposable bottles are usually not made of glass, but of the plastic PET (polyethylene terephthalate).
- On the other hand, there is a returnable deposit on certain returnable bottles in Germany, which varies in amount depending on the type of bottle.
- So there is basically an 8 cents returnable deposit on beer bottles, unless it is a beer bottle with a swing top, in which case there would be a 15 cents returnable deposit.
- All other returnable bottles, for example for fruit juices or water, also have a deposit of 15 cents.
- The difference between returnable and non-returnable bottles is that they are not in its components are broken up, but simply cleaned thoroughly and then reused will.

Return of returnable returnable bottles
In contrast to the one-way deposit, which is regulated by law in the Packaging Ordinance (VerpackV), there is no such regulation for the returnable deposit.
- For this reason, there is basically no obligation for individual retailers to take back returnable bottles.
- This is only justified if the returnable bottles are to be returned to the shop where they were bought, whereby the receipt is helpful in case of doubt.
- In practice, however, it is common for returnable returnable bottles to work without any problems where these bottles are offered or where bottles of a similar type are available.
