Build your own wooden table frame
Glass tables with a wooden frame go well with many furnishing styles. They are suitable as dining tables, coffee tables or as a dining area in the garden. Build such a table yourself from smooth-edged strips.
Design a solid wood table with a glass top
The table should be made of solid wood in which the glass table top is framed. Please note the following:
- All types of wood are suitable for building a table frame. Remember that the material is moving. at wood an expansion joint is also required with stainless steel.
- Smooth-edged profiles are suitable as building material. These have rounded edges and a smooth surface. The wood can be adapted to the existing furnishings using glazes.
- Profiles made of larch wood are ideal because the material is hard and robust. Spruce or pine are also suitable for the home. Oak and beech are rarely available as smooth-edged profiles. You would have to laboriously cut the boards yourself.
- If you want to build a garden table, you should definitely opt for larch, as this wood is weather-resistant. Protect it from moisture with glaze or oil.

Build the table frame
Plan a height of 77 centimeters for a dining table and a table top 120 centimeters long and 90 centimeters wide. A height of 45 centimeters and a plate measuring 100 x 60 to 70 centimeters are sufficient for a coffee table. The specified dimensions refer to a coffee table. The frame consists of two wooden frames. The upper one is six centimeters wide, the lower one eight centimeters wide. The table legs are part of the lower frame.
- Cut two pieces the length of the table from the narrow strips (part A). Saw two strips to the width of the table, minus twelve centimeters (part B). Round the cut edges with sandpaper.
- Assemble components A and B with dowels and white glue, as shown in picture 1.
- Cut two components from the wide strip to the length of the table (part C). Saw two strips to the width minus 16 centimeters (part D). You also need four table legs from the square profiles. Round off the cut edges.
- Put the components together as shown in pictures 2 and 3. Dowel the strips to the table legs so that the table is sufficiently stable.
- Glue the narrow frame on the widths. This later frames the glass plate, while the other serves as a support. They have a two centimeter wide border all around the frame.
Fit the glass plate
If you have worked according to the dimensions mentioned, the upper frame has an opening of 84 x 46 centimeters. Have a plate cut to size that is five millimeters shorter and narrower.
- The frame has a height of 2.5 centimeters. A glass plate of this thickness is heavy and expensive. A plate one centimeter thick is sufficiently stable. When you put this in the frame, the surface of the glass will be lower than the edge. Glue strips 1.5 centimeters thick on the support surfaces in the table frame to compensate for the difference in height.
- To brush, oil or glaze the table and insert the glass plate after it has dried. Check whether this is in line with the frame. If it doesn't, take the plate out.
- ribbons If the plate is too high, you can remove a little from the strip and treat the strip again with varnish. This is usually not necessary with glaze or oil. If the plate is too deep, spray transparent silicone onto the support bar. Peel it off smoothly with detergent solution and a spatula. Do not insert the plate until it has hardened.
Table frames with table tops can be easily built according to these instructions, as you use prefabricated parts. You don't need a circular saw, a hand saw is sufficient.
