VIDEO: Changing a cutting disc made easy

The quality of the grinding wheels for angle grinders has continuously improved over the past few years. As a result, the service life has increased and the disc has to be changed less often. Nevertheless, it does not work completely without changing, after the corresponding load, each pane is worn out and has to be replaced. Decide which one Cutting disc is the right one for your application. Depending on the material to be separated, specialized discs are offered that can only be used for the intended purpose. A disc for stone, for example, does not do a good job with metal and vice versa. The cutting discs are therefore clearly classified in terms of color and in writing. The thinner a cutting disc, the faster it cuts.

This is how a cutting disc is changed

  1. When shopping, pay attention to the correct dimensions for your angle grinder. In Germany, the size and diameter of the receptacle are standardized. There are 115 and 125 mm diameters for one-hand angle grinders, 180 mm for light two-hand grinding machines and 230 mm cutting discs for heavy machines. The very small discs for precision mechanics will not be discussed here.
  2. Older angle grinders sometimes do not have a built-in lock for the gearbox for changing the disc. A suitable open-end wrench must be used to counterhold the grinder shaft. The round retaining nut is then loosened with a pin wrench, which is supplied with every machine, or by hand. With modern machines, you just push in the locking button and the lock engages at the intended point on the shaft, so that the disk can be released without counter-holding.
  3. If you have cut-off wheels with a curvature, you must ensure that the wheel does not rub against the housing of the machine; it must then be installed in a reversed manner. This has no effect on use. The round nut can also be turned if necessary. All you have to do to fix it is push in the lock again, tighten the round nut and you can continue working.
