Would you like to change something in your apartment again, put a new wallpaper on the wall? That involves some work. If the old wallpaper already has several coats of paint, then you have to remove these before re-wallpapering.

Have you decided to beautify your apartment with a new wallpaper and new color? To do this, the old wallpaper must first be removed, especially if it has already been painted over several times.

Preparations for removing the wallpaper

Most of the time you renovate the apartment when it is occupied. This means that either carpeting or other flooring is available, which should not be damaged if possible, as it will be used for a few more years. And also the furniture should not suffer any damage from it.

  • So first clear out the furniture that can be moved to other rooms.
  • Then lay out one or more solid painter's tarpaulins on the floor and attach them to the edges of the carpeting or the floor covering with painter's tape.
  • Now you just have to prepare all the utensils such as spatula, water and garbage bags and then you can start.

Removing old wallpaper

  1. First of all, you can try to see if the old wallpaper can be removed easily, which of course would be great. To do this, go under the wallpaper on an edge or on an edge with the spatula and try to peel it off. Unfortunately, this does not always work.
  2. So it's time to soak the wallpaper. Place old newspapers or cloths on the foil to catch the running water.
  3. Then spray the old wallpaper with warm water either from below or starting from above. You can also add wallpaper remover to the water, but this does not greatly improve the effect.
  4. Now let the wet wallpaper soak through. If you notice that it dries very quickly, spray again immediately.
  5. If the wallpaper is nicely soaked, it should peel off without any problems. If it is more difficult to remove, you can also use the spatula to help.
  6. If you have the impression that the water is not going through the colors properly, take an old screwdriver or an old knife and scratch the old wallpaper all over the place. The water can then flow better under the wallpaper.
  7. Smaller spots that are stubborn and stick to the wall can be removed with the spatula.
  8. When everything is ready, let the wall dry well and then the new wallpaper can be put on.
