Icelander races at a gallop
Many riders have had to experience it: During a ride, the horse is frightened and it goes through in a frenzied gallop. Whether Shetland pony, Icelander or warmblood - the flight instinct and thus the danger of running away is inherent in every horse. In such a shock situation it is not easy to calm yourself and your horse.
Keep calm when the horse runs away at a gallop
- First of all, you have to try to keep your nerve. You only have a chance to calm your horse if you stay calm and act carefully yourself.
- Work with your voice immediately: speak soothingly to your horse, with soothing sounds, as you would otherwise when parrying. Under no circumstances should your excitement be reflected in your voice, the horse would notice this immediately and only become even more nervous.
- It is important that, despite the probably very hard glop, you do not switch to the light seat to relieve yourself when the horse races at a gallop, you would give your horse even more freedom of movement so that it can accelerate even further could. Stand up and sit deep in the saddle. Put your own weight on the horse's hindquarters so that it has to work harder and absorb less speed. Without the upright seat, you hardly have any more opportunities to act on a continuous horse, regardless of whether it is a pony, Icelander or large horse.

- Try to put your Icelander or your large horse alternately to the right and left so that it is irritated and slowed down while running. The impact in this situation can be much more intense than in a controlled context.
- If the horse does not react or does not react sufficiently, you have to try to steer it into a volte. Of course, you must have enough space available for this. Here you place your horse in one direction and ride the volte, getting smaller and smaller, until the animal comes to a standstill. With a continuous horse you have to work very hard; if the reins are too reluctant, take the inner reins firmly, hold them tightly in your hand and hold on to the saddle compartment with the same hand.
- In case you notice that you no longer have any control over your continuous horse and sooner or later try to hold up until you reach manageable and safe terrain. In a safe place, i.e. where there are no trunks, stones or the like on the ground, let yourself fall from the horse in a controlled manner. Make sure that you have taken both feet out of the stirrups beforehand.

- For fellow riders in a group in which a horse passes, the following applies: Never gallop after a horse that is going through in order to possibly reach and stop it. This would give the frightened horse the feeling that the herd is following him in his flight and that there is indeed danger. If instead it notices that the herd is lagging behind, it will be more likely to let the rider calm it down.
