General information about building a sandstone wall

  • For the construction of a sandstone wall, bricks of different sizes can be used, as well as hewn and uncut bricks. In addition to real natural stones, there are also imitations, some of which look deceptively real and are much cheaper.
  • A natural stone wall always looks irregular due to the different shapes of the bricks. Over time, a natural patina forms on the surface of these natural stones. You can leave this as it is, but you can also remove it with the appropriate means.

How to build a garden wall with large bricks

  • Before you can start building the wall, you should sort the bricks by size and create an appropriate foundation. To do this, dig a trench 40 cm deep. In width, it should be excavated a third of the later height of the wall.
  • First, a 30 cm thick layer of gravel is placed in the trench, which then has to be compacted. Then put a layer of sand on the gravel, which should be about 5-10 cm thick.
  • You can now place the stones. You should choose large bricks for the first row, as these will have to bear the entire load of the future wall. If the wall is to be on a slope, the distance between the slope and the wall should be around 40 cm in order to have enough space for the backfill.
  • Building a garden wall - helpful tips and tricks

Building a garden wall is not difficult. The type of construction depends on ...

  • If the ground is particularly damp or if the wall is to be a little higher, it is advisable to lay a drainage pipe behind the first row of stones. The drainage pipe must be laid with a slight slope so that the water can drain off easily.
  • If you have placed the first row of large bricks, the joints are filled with sand and the bricks are tapped with a rubber mallet. The pounding also compacts the sand in the joints.
  • Now fill the area between the slope and the wall with gravel. Then place the next row of stones. Once the second row has been set, fill the joints and the area behind the wall again with sand or gravel. To stabilize the wall, you should set anchor stones at even intervals. Anchor stones are longer stones that are placed across the direction of the wall. So they protrude further into the slope and ensure stability.
  • Then continue building in this way until the desired height of the wall is reached. For the top layer, you should use bricks with a smooth surface so that a uniform image is created.

You can usually build smaller walls made of sandstone yourself. In the case of higher walls, it is advisable to consult a professional. In the case of a free-standing wall, the supporting function of a slope is replaced by another row of stones in order to achieve the required stability.
