A drainage system is built when it comes to draining excess and stagnant moisture from the soil. Read here how to do this.

"How do I build the trench?"

  • The principle of draining wet soils was already known to the ancients. In the absence of suitable material, stones were simply poured into a trench that had to have a slope. Build one like that drainage but only as an emergency solution, the risk of clogging is great.
  • The gradient is still an indispensable prerequisite for successful drainage. Even the best derivation cannot work if there is no or too little gradient. In such a case, you need to resort to technical aids and pump out the collected water.
  • In order to have to move as little earth as possible, it is advantageous to keep the trench as narrow as possible. However, the nature of the soil plays a major role in this. A loamy soil can be excavated to a greater depth than 1 m with the so-called drainage spade, a very sandy soil will have to be excavated much wider because the walls roll over the ditch.

Drainage must be planned

  • Think about how the drained water can escape and drain away unhindered. Is an area larger than 100 m2, it is sometimes worthwhile to create a collector, a significantly thicker line that is fed by the individual strands of the surface and lies across the strands.
  • The distances between the strands and their depth depend on the local conditions. If the soil is impermeable, such as heavily clayey, build the strands narrower and deeper. In sandy soils, the distance can be up to 6 m and the depth should be around 1.3 m. The flatter the line is buried, the closer it has to be.
  • Put on a splash guard around the house - this is how it works

  • Use a special drainage pipe which - depending on the volume of water - can be up to 120 mm thick. The collector should then not measure less than 200 mm. Old stocks of clay pipes can also be relocated without hesitation. The bottom of the trench must always be level and free of stones and have a gradient of at least 2%.
  • Cover the drainage with gravel or gravel before filling it up so that no soil can get into the pipe system. Large stones have no place directly above the pipe.
