The Isar - almost 300 kilometers long, flows from the Karwendel in Tyrol through cities such as Bad Tölz, Munich, Landshut and finally flows into the Danube at Deggendorf. In many places, especially in Munich, the Isar is a popular bathing river in summer. However, when swimming or bathing you must always be careful of your own safety and that of others.

Basic rules for swimming in the Isar

The river and its banks are very popular because of the many opportunities to relax and unwind. In spite of everything, there are a few basic things to keep in mind when going to the swim goes into the Isar.

  • Basically: look first, then swim. Even in the Isar, the supposedly calm waters can hide dangerous currents or water rollers. If you get into a roller that pulls you underwater, do the following: Stay calm, don't work against the current. Take a deep breath and immerse yourself in the current. Dive out of the roller at the bottom of the Isar.

  • You should also note: Bathing in the Isar can unexpectedly lead to hypothermia and weaken the body! Also watch out for weirs when swimming, which can be very dangerous. Stay away from these! You should also always be careful when rescuing people and first of all call the emergency services and rather pull the person ashore with the help of a rope or branch.

Bathing in the Isar in Munich

The Bavarian capital is currently working on a new ordinance that affects, among other things, the bathing ban. It is not yet clear whether much will change in the current bathing ban. What is certain is that the city wants to renaturate the Isar.

  • Officially allowed bathing places in Munich: In the south between Großhesseloher Brücke and Braunauer Eisenbahnbrücke you can go swimming on both sides of the Isar. You can go swimming in the center between the Braunauer Eisenbahnbrücke and Reichenbachbrücke on the eastern side of the river. Bathing is also allowed in the north from the Max-Joseph-Brücke to the Oberföhringer weir on the eastern side of the river.
  • Of course, the man from Munich also bathes in places where it is not officially allowed. Popular places include, for example, the gravel banks below the Müller Volksbad. However, you should be aware that the regulations exist for a good reason. Several people are killed in the Isar every year. You can also get a hefty fine if caught by law enforcement officers.
  • Those who like to lie naked on the banks of the Isar and swim in the water without bathing suits or pants are advised to visit the following nudist areas: The Flauchersteg is ideal in the Flaucher facilities. Nudism is also allowed south of the Grünwald municipal boundary. To the south of the Grünwalder Bridge people bathe in the nude. Along the southern Isar there are also nudist areas in the Pupplinger Au on both sides of the bank. You can also swim naked on the east side between the Brudermühlbrücke and the Braunau railway bridge.
