Pump curve for a centrifugal pump
A pump curve is also known as a performance diagram. In the case of a centrifugal pump, it provides information on how the delivery rate changes with increasing delivery head. The whole is represented in the form of a curve in a two-dimensional diagram.
You are interested in a centrifugal pump. However, the performance data relating to the engine output and the delivery rate do not give you a precise overview. In order to be able to decide whether this pump will meet your requirements, you need a performance diagram. This is called the pump curve.
The performance of a centrifugal pump
- The most important performance characteristic of a centrifugal pump is the power consumption of the motor. The higher the engine power, the greater the delivery rate. So if a large delivery rate is required, the motor must also be correspondingly powerful.
- However, the maximum delivery rate is measured directly at the outlet connection of the pump. As the delivery head increases, the delivery rate inevitably decreases.
- For each pump, however, the maximum delivery head is also given in the technical information. This in turn depends on the pressure that the pump can generate.

Interpret the pump curve correctly
- The diagram in which the pump characteristic of the centrifugal pump is shown consists of a vertical and a horizontal one Straight lines. There are graduation marks for the delivery rate on the vertical straight line. There are markings for the delivery head on the horizontal straight line.
- The curve in the diagram starts with a high value for the flow rate. It then drops more or less steeply. At the maximum delivery head, the delivery rate is zero liters. The intermediate values can then be used to read exactly how many liters the pump can deliver up to what height.
However, the delivery rate of a centrifugal pump decreases as soon as thinner pipes are used. Bends and branches in the pipe system also have a negative impact on performance. The pump curve therefore only provides limited information about the actual performance of the pump.
