Dead dogs before the law

If your property is located in a water protection area, you are not allowed to bury any animals on it. This is also not allowed in the immediate vicinity of public paths and squares. So that the animal is not dug up by wild animals, you need to cover it with a layer of earth of at least 50 centimeters.

  • If your dog has died of a reportable disease such as rabies, you must not bury it yourself.
  • Ask the responsible veterinary office for the exact rules.
  • Only one animal may be buried.
  • It has to be your own dog.
  • He may only be buried on his own land.
  • The property must not be in the water protection area.
  • Burying next to a public path or place is prohibited, a distance of two meters is usually sufficient.
  • The dog must be covered with 50 centimeters of soil.

Burial on his own property

Don't wait too long to bury your pet after your pet dies. You are not allowed to keep it with you. A veterinarian may take care of the storage if you cannot bury the animal immediately.

Dig a pit in the garden that is three feet deep. Make sure that it is of sufficient size. The animal must be able to lie flat in it. This ensures that you can pour 50 centimeters of soil over the dog.

Refrain from putting plastic toys in the grave of your darling. Do not use a wooden coffin either. Better wrap him in a cotton blanket or paper. A box is also not a problem.

Alternatives to burial on your own land

You can have your dog cremated in an animal crematorium. In some institutes you are allowed to be present at the cremation. Upon request, you can get the ashes in an urn or in a small cardboard box. It is allowed to scatter the ashes in the forest.

There are animal cemeteries in many cities and towns. There you can choose a nice place for your dog and bury him with dignity. There you have the opportunity to visit your darling and lovingly design his grave.

Refrain from burying the animal in a place that does not belong to you. It is forbidden to bury animals in public forests and meadows. This is punished with a fine of up to 20,000 euros.

It is normal to mourn a loyal companion who has been your companion for many years. Your desire to bury him with dignity is understandable. Even if no other animal can replace your dog, a new dog by your side is a great comfort.
