Sink drain leaking - here's how to proceed

  • First of all, you need to find out which of the many connections the drain is leaking from. Most of the time, the lower drainage part of a sink does not consist of a single pipe, but of a connection, siphon and pipe connections. Theoretically, the leak could be at all connections or a pipe might even be defective. Perhaps you will first conduct a visual inspection so that you can identify "suspicious" spots.
  • It is best to place a mop bucket or large bowl under the drain that can catch any water that may run out.
  • Now you need to dry the entire sink drain carefully with a cloth.
  • Now plug the basin of the sink and let water into the sink.
  • Open the drain and watch the water spill. If the sink drain is grossly leaking, you will notice this immediately by the water running out at the appropriate point.
  • Toilet leaking - what to do?

Sometimes there is a build-up of moisture in the bathroom. Here ...

  • If there is only a slight leak in the drain, this work can become a test of patience, because you have to locate the tell-tale drops of water. Use kitchen paper to run along the drainpipe.
  • Once you've found the leak, you need to find out what caused it. Usually the seal is bad at a transition point (replace, but only with a suitable seal), has been forgotten (actually happens often) or simply slipped when screwing on the pipe part (again try). Often, however, you also notice that the pipe part or the connection was damaged when screwing on, for example on the thread. Get a new part, but take the old one with you to the hardware store. Unfortunately, there are countless parts and dimensions in the sanitary area. Otherwise you will quickly buy the wrong or unsuitable part.
  • In doing this, you may find the leak immediately and repair the damage quickly. But it can also happen to you that you need a few hours for the damage, because the connection is simply not tight. Then just try using superglue that you put on the leaky connection from the outside.
