Word has got around that alcohol-free beer is in most cases not completely alcohol-free, but contains up to 0.5% ethanol. Beers with 0.0 percent have actually only been available in stores since 2006. But does this small difference really decide whether or not you will be affected by alcohol? And is it even important to stay absolutely sober and if so, how does it work?

Alcohol-free beer also carries risks

Commonly it is alcohol-free beer produced by interrupting the fermentation process prematurely, namely before an alcohol content of more than 0.5 percent has arisen. However, the alcohol that has formed up to this point will remain in the drink. By the way, fruit juices often have very similar values because fermentation also takes place here. But what's wrong with that?

  • Even the smallest amounts of alcohol can be fatal if you are a dry alcoholic. Here, 0.5% is easily enough to re-trigger your addictive behavior and thus initiate a relapse. If you have such a history, you should also forego the completely alcohol-free beer. Thanks to reverse osmosis, this really does not contain any alcohol, but the taste alone can act as a trigger.
  • Beer with 0.0 percent, even if it is not suitable for former alcoholics, still has its raison d'etre. If you drink large amounts of the almost non-alcoholic barley juice and get involved in a car accident, you have a problem. Your insurance will assume that you are partially at fault from as little as 0.3 per mille.

So keep the 0.0 percent level

  • If you are very disciplined, you can go for a completely non-alcoholic beer. But only do this if you know that - if the brand of your choice does not exist - you will not fall back on the barley juice with alcohol residues. In this case, their zero level would be at risk.
  • Find an alternative drink that you always consume when you are out and about in good company. Drinking has a lot to do with habit. If you get into the habit of always drinking an orange lemonade when you go out, this will soon become normal behavior for you and you will no longer feel the need for a "light".
