VIDEO: Bleeding old radiators

In every radiator, especially during the summer months when the heater is out of order, air on. The air causes noise and prevents the heat of the heating water from being transferred.

Old radiators like to bubble

  • Depending on the type of radiator valve, you either need a valve key that you can buy at a hardware store. It looks like a small butterfly and has a nimbus opening.
  • Or you can simply use a pair of pliers with which you can open the valve, which is operated via a screw cap.
  • Do not confuse the vent valve with the thermostat or regulator located on the other side of the radiator.

How to prime

  1. The heater must be in operation and at operating temperature for venting.
  2. Bleeding the heater - instructions

When you turn on the radiators at the beginning of the cold season and notice ...

  3. Turn the radiator to full heat output. The circulation pump transports the hot heating water into the individual radiators and exerts pressure. Then when you open the heating valves, the water pressure pushes the air towards the heating valves so that it can exit there.
  4. If your house has multiple floors, start venting old radiators on the top floor. This is where the air comes out first.
  5. Place the valve key on the valve and turn it to the left. If the valve has a screw cap, turn the pliers to the left.
  6. Do not open the valve all the way straight away, just enough so that the air can gradually escape. Hold a container under the valve so that any air can escape water drips into it.
  7. If the air pressure drops, open the valve until the heating water finally flows out. Be careful because the heating water is hot.
  8. Then close the valve by turning it to the right.
  9. Continue the process on the next radiator.
  10. If the interfering noises persist or if there is no heating output, there may also be another fault. The expansion tank could be defective or a pipe could be installed incorrectly. In this case, you will not get anywhere without a heating specialist.

Old radiators are - partly due to their design - nevertheless very effective and do not necessarily have to be exchanged for new radiators.
