Switzerland is an extremely popular holiday destination and a country that is often crossed on the way to the sunny south. However, the Swiss allow themselves to be paid for driving on their national roads of category 1 and 2.

Swiss national roads are chargeable

  • Unlike in many other countries, where you have to pay route-related fees at the toll stations, you need a vignette to use Swiss national roads. This is a sticker that you purchase and must attach to the windshield of your car or motor home in a clearly visible place. Motorcycles and trailers pulled by motor vehicles also require a vignette. If you are caught without a valid vignette, you face a heavy fine.
  • Unlike the short-term sticker in Austria, for example, the Swiss vignette is only available for a period of 14 months. Within this period of time, which is always from 1.12. of the previous year until January 31 calculated for the following year, you can use the toll national roads as often as you want. However, the journey through the large St. Bernhard tunnel and Munt la Schera is not covered by the purchase of the vignette; for this you have to shell out a special toll on site.
  • In front of and at the border crossings into Switzerland, numerous contact points offer the vignette for sale, so that in principle you do not necessarily have to worry about it beforehand. But to be on the safe side, you can get the sticker before you start your journey.
