Build a wooden fruit box yourself
The fruit box - indispensable for transport and storage. Many years ago the term "staircase" was commonly used in connection with fruit and vegetables. The name has changed, but the appearance and purpose have not. You can also build the fruit box yourself for the garden and cellar.
What you need:
- Plywood sheet
- Triangular bar, ~ 30mm
- Stapler
- Jigsaw
- saw
- Screw clamp
- Wood screws, 20 mm
Building a fruit crate is not a problem
- You have to decide for what purpose you want to use the fruit crate. If it is used for transport, it should not be excessively large and made of light material. The load capacity can be around 20-25 kg.
- If, on the other hand, you want to store fruit in it, it can be larger but less high. It is best to store fruit in just one shift. Ventilation holes can also be dispensed with here
How to put the box together
A very friendly material for a fruit crate is 7mm plywood. It's easy to get hold of, not very expensive, and relatively light. Make a sketch of the desired dimensions of the box and work out how much plywood you need.
- Saw out the four side parts and the base true to size and provide the two narrow side parts with one opening each. A jigsaw is the right tool for this. Sand or tape the edges of the slot to prevent injuries from splinters. A number of slots or holes in the plates ensure good ventilation.
- The triangular strip is used to connect all parts. It runs along the floor around the interior. It holds the side panels together in the corners. If you want to stack several boxes on top of each other, leave the strips in the corners approx. Protrude 5 cm. The next box is then placed on top.
- Now connect the components with a powerful electric tacker. A screw clamp is a good helper for fixing the triangular strips in the right places. If your stapler manages nailing with approx. 16 mm long clips cannot, of course, can also be screwed.
- The floor in particular must be firmly attached from below so that it does not tear off when it is heavily used. Six to eight additional screws each 20 mm long ensure safety.

Stored in this way, your fruit will feel good and stay fresh for a long time. In the interests of health protection, you should refrain from treatment with wood preservatives or paint. The formation of rotten spots can be suppressed by lining the fruit crate with wrapping paper.
